You are invited to a special screening and discussion of the new documentary Bombshell, which examines how the U.S. government shaped and controlled the public narrative surrounding the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki—and how journalists worked to challenge and expose that narrative.

As diplomats and civil society groups from around the world gather at UN Headquarters to review the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the cornerstone of the global nuclear non-proliferation regime, Bombshell offers a look back at how reporters covered the first wartime use of nuclear weapons, with important lessons for journalists covering our new nuclear age today.

This free event is co-organized by the Stanley Center for Peace and Security’s Developing Story Project, Foreign Policy for America, and the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. Bombshell premiered on PBS American Experience in January and is screening across the country in collaboration with universities, journalism programs, and other partners.

Following the film, there will be remarks from Bulletin president and CEO Alexandra Bell, followed by a discussion and Q&A with Bombshell director Ben Loeterman and producer Gaia De Simoni, and President of Radio Free Asia, Bay Fang. Moderating the discussion will be Nadine Farid Johnson the inaugural policy director of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University.

A networking reception with refreshments will follow the discussion, with generous support from Ploughshares.
